The Coaching Process

The first meeting:

The first session sets the framework for the coaching and clarifies and defines the way of working together for a set time. The framework includes complete confidentiality and for example agreements on how the superior will be included in the process. The amount of working hours will be specified and timing and setting for the session will be discussed.

To evaluate progress, key points will be identified, their current status defined, objectives set and achievement measured.

My coaching process for the next sessions follows the EAGLE model designed by myself. The letters E-A-G-L-E correspond to German words, the translation will be given in brackets:

A coaching sessions starts with building/reentering the relationship between Coach and Coachee and to create a positive, trusting atmosphere for the coaching.
First, the time between the last session and now is evaluated. What has changed since the last session? What worked, what needs to be revised? Were there blockades and stoppages? How did the coachee deal with the homework?
The Coachee then explains what he wants to deal with during this session. What has to happen for him to know and feel that this hour was worthwhile spending? What exactly is the goal for this session?
The Coach accompanies the Coachee on the path towards change. She always adopts an empathetic, appreciative attitude and shows confidence that the Coachee already possesses all necessary skills and capabilities to solve the problem/issue - they only need to be brought to light and activated.

During this step the Coach uses all available Coaching Tools. She tunes in to the Coachee and doesn't follow an agenda of her own.
A plan for the next activities and steps has to be agreed upon, latest at the end of the session.
The Coachee has worked out his own ideas for a solution and has to now integrate this into his life by taking the next steps. The Coachee is responsible for this and has to commit to it. The Coach's responsibility here is to check if there is a clear plan of action and the necessary commitment to carry it through. Questions like "how do you know that you reached your goal" are helpful. Sometimes a written documentation is agreed upon, like a journal. The Coach holds the Coachee accountable.
Once again the Coachee´s commitment is asked for. The Coach clearly states his confidence in the resourcefulness and commitment of the Coachee and points out the achievements.
If necessary the time and date for the next session are agreed upon.
